DaChan Bay Terminals Welcomes Shenzhen’s First Pure Electric Tugboat

06 August 2025

DaChan Bay Terminals recently welcomed Shenzhen’s first pure electric tugboat, “Shen Gang Dian Tuo 1”, which started servicing vessels operating in and out of the DaChan Bay port since mid-July, marking a significant advancement in the terminals’ commitment to sustainability and the Shenzhen Port’s strategic vision for a zero-carbon future.  DaChan Bay Terminals is located in western Shenzhen and is operated by Modern Terminals Limited.

Operated by Shenzhen DaChan Bay Towing Co., Ltd., in which DaChan Bay Terminals has an equity stake, “Shen Gang Dian Tuo 1” officially commenced operations on 17 July after a series of testing at the port. Equipped with a high-capacity battery system of 6,880 kWh, it is currently the most powerful pure electric tugboat in South China.

It is projected that the deployment of the pure electric tugboat will help reduce diesel consumption by more than 300 tonnes annually, reducing direct carbon emissions by approximately 1,000 tonnes. Additionally, the vessel operates at a noise level 20 decibels lower than conventional tugboats.  All these contribute to a quieter and cleaner port environment.

DaChan Bay Terminals has long been recognised as a pioneer in green port development. From its inception, the port distinguished itself as the world’s first container terminal to deploy a full fleet of electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes in 2007, significantly reducing carbon emissions. In addition, the provision of shore power at all berths and electrification of its internal haulage fleet and other mobile equipment are part of its decarbonisation achievements in recent years.

DaChan Bay Terminals will continue to work with various stakeholders with an aim to not only achieving its decarbonisation goals but also to contribute to green shipping.
